Do you want the chance to see a kiwi in the wild? Like the idea of camping next to the ocean but don’t have the gear? Would prefer to stay in a comfortable lodge and experience island forests, kiwi watching and guided walking but want it all sorted for you? Then we have the trip for you!

Our precious national icon the kiwi is a shy nocturnal bird. To catch a glimpse of this endangered species in the wild we take you to a predator free island reserve for the night. You have the choice of glamourous camping in a fully set up roomy tent/mattress/duvet/chairs etc, just a stone throw from the sea. Or you may wish to upgrade to a cosy cottage or well-appointed lodge (availability dependant) which will further support the community conservation efforts on the island.
Our friendly guide will collect you around 4pm from your accommodation in Paihia, Kerikeri or Whangaroa and whisk you away to an island paradise. You won’t get your feet wet as a handy causeway has been built so we can skip the boat trip and drive onto the reserve.
Your conservation experience will begin with a guided walk around the islands track system. Here you will learn about native plants, medicinal and cultural uses. The endangered species living in the area, predator free island systems, New Zealand’s strange and unique evolution as well as local regional history. Stunning views and scenery abound, including Northlands famous Kauri trees. Visit disused kiwi burrows, see kiwi feeding areas and learn about kiwi ecology.
A delicious dinner will be served after some free time with wholesome organic local produce. The trip provides you with the unique opportunity to take a self-guided kiwi night walk. Explore the tracks at night at your own pace and encounter kiwi in their natural habitat! You will be set up with a briefing card outlining the all-important low impact guidelines and tips for a successful encounter with the Northland brown kiwi. Red coloured torches will be provided to ensure kiwi are not frightened or distressed by your approach.
Your guide will then leave you to enjoy the atmosphere and tranquillity of this forested marine oasis and plan your evening’s kiwi adventure. Hearty breakfast supplies, locally produced teas and roasted coffee will be in your accommodation for you to enjoy at your own pace in the morning. Your guide will return you to your accommodation mid-morning or you may choose to add on a guided sea kayak trip of the stunning surrounding inlet before you go.
