The Whangaroa Harbour Experience

Whangaroa is a hidden jewel. A fantastic trip awaits you, surrounded by unbroken forested hills and monolithic rock structures you will quickly feel like you are paddling in the middle of a Jurassic Park. Sparkling green sheltered bays and rich cultural history seep from this amazing location. Explore WW2 army bunkers; take a walk up to the Dukes nose, an amazing rock promontory with 360° views of the harbour and outer coast. We are proud to be based in the Whangaroa district and can’t wait to show you its wonders. World class scenery, unique New Zealand ecology and geology combined with interesting and safe paddling equals a true Northland Adventure.

The Kerikeri inlet Experience

This sheltered inlet provides many interesting highlights for a day on the water with your NOA guide. Black volcanic rocks jut from the sea and pacific oysters just beg to be tasted on the low tide. On a higher tide we will take you tripping through the mangrove forests and show you ancient Polynesian fish traps. Visit Pa sites (Maori hill forts) and hear the interesting stories come to life with tales of paramount chiefs, brave missionaries and a rich tapestry of settlement history. Stop in at a predator free island reserve and see kiwi feeding sites and disused burrows. This is a great day out in the Northern bays and much more than just a paddling trip.

The Mahinepua Peninsula/Matauri coast Experience

Clear blue Pacific waters, vibrant reefs, amazing snorkelling and white sandy beaches highlight this section of coast. Watch fish swim under your boat as the forests of kelp slip under your hull. Visits from dolphins and rare and endangered bird species are common here, on rare occasions even the odd pacific green turtle can pop up. We will have a lunch break on a beautiful beach along the way and you will have the chance to take a snorkel trip with our P.A.D.I Divemaster who not only will keep you safe but will interpret the rich marine ecology. This piece of coast will stay close to your heart and the day is one to remember.

Overnight sea kayak tours

Duration: 2 days with overnight accommodation
Cost: $495 per person

The Whangaroa Harbour exploration

This beautiful harbour has so many things to see and do an extended overnight trip is a great way to fully experience the magic of Whangaroa. After 15 years of guiding here we know where to take you. Take all the highlights from the day trip above but now we have more time so we can do so much more! We will stay at the charming Lanes Cove cottage for the night nestled in the native forest, towering waterfalls and right on the shore. Fishing and shellfish collecting to add to our evening meal, prepared with local organic produce and after dark spy the glow worms sparkling through the stream. We will add in whatever interests the group. Kayak up a beautiful bush clad river system and have a freshwater swim in the morning. Take a bushwalk or just soak up the serenity of Ranfurly bay. No houses, no roads, just forest, birds and mirror calm waters. If conditions are perfect, we may pop out the harbour entrance to view beautiful sea caves and have a snorkel. This extended trip is a great pick. Please contact us to check hut availability or join a scheduled trip.

The Mahinepua coast exploration

Two days of paradise NOA style. For this little beauty we set up base at our local whanau campground run by the awesome hapu (tribe) of Mahinepua. We now have time to fully explore this stunning pacific subtropical playground. Due to the varied contours and directions of this coast we always enjoy safe easy paddling with the bonus of clear blue waters delivered by the tropical current stream usually only accessible on outer coastal areas. Once again take all the highlights from the Mahinepua day trip above but now we can show you north and south, give you more time on the golden beaches, snorkelling the reefs, hunting out crayfish and enjoying this amazing piece of coast. You can wander off in the afternoon/evening and explore the great DoC track along the peninsula and capture some amazing photos of the surrounding coast and Cavalli islands. You may want to have some fishing fun and set out the long-line for a chance to catch a snapper for dinner or spy some of the endangered shorebirds that feed in the bay. We supply totally comfy camping with air mattresses, tents and for larger groups a retro 1970’s caravan as base camp. So no roughing it on this adventure, just pure enjoyment! Come and experience our amazing backyard and tour with the locals. Please contact us to check camp availability or join a scheduled trip .

Multiday sea kayak tours

Duration: 3 and 5 days
Cost: $880 per person (3day), $1250 per person (5day)

North East Coast Expeditions

Calling seasoned paddlers and beginners with an adventurous spirit. This expedition is a trip of a lifetime. Expeditions are run by request (unless scheduled/see web calendar or contact us) and cater for groups of up to 11 people. NOA teams up with Pacific Coast Kayaks for these outer coastal expeditions, Justin and Mark have a wealth of knowledge and experience between them running extended sea kayak tours and know the coast like the back of their hand. They hold high level instructor and guide qualifications and have robust, audited safety systems for these special trips.

  • Amazing outer coastal paddling
  • Sea caves, vibrant reefs, uninhabited islands and kayak surfing
  • Comfortable hut accommodation
  • Delicious meals prepared by a chef
  • Skilled instructors and magnificent marine environments

We start the adventure in the beautiful Whangaroa harbour providing a fantastic training ground for new paddlers before we hit the exposed coastal paddling that characterises this NOA adventure. The first two nights we settle into the great little bush cottage hidden out the far western arm of Whangaroa amongst mirror calm bays and gigantic waterfalls. This gives us two magical days exploring the harbours forested inlets, bush walks and historical and geological features. World class sea caves feature here where it’s possible to paddle through fissures in the outer harbour wall accessible only by kayak, bring a camera! Day three takes us on a true coastal expedition with inky blue waters, vibrant rock gardens/reef systems and stunning coastal habitats. Marine mammals of all shapes and sizes can be encountered along the way as well as a stunning array of rare sea birds including the wandering albatross. By the end of the day we will reach the Cavalli island group providing us with an exposed chain of islands with some of the most amazing paddling the Southern hemisphere has to offer. Here we stay in another fantastic DoC hut. Justin helped to build the hut and has worked with The Department of Conservation here for many years, so on or off the water you have a wealth of local knowledge. During the final two days of the trip we will circumnavigate the island group with its deserted beaches, majestic caves, towering cliffs and crystal clear reefs. Snorkelling and fishing is world class and all the gear is provided for you to use. Snag a snapper or rustle up a crayfish for dinner, relax on the beach or take a walk along Motukawanui’s island tracks. You’ve just discovered a South Pacific paradise! The expedition ends at Matauri bay where you may spend some time surfing the gentle waves or land in an adjoining sheltered bay. This 5-day tour is a true trip of a lifetime, 3-day options following the same route are also possible, but we highly recommend the full 5 days, so you can fully enjoy the vast range of other activities this special piece of coast has to offer.
